Structuring elements

Structuring elements

ATIC structuring elements result from the interpretative conceptualization of the nursing metaparadigm constructs described by Jacqueline Fawcett in the 80s: person, health, environment and nursing.

This interpretative conceptualization of the meta-paradigm concepts elaborated Dr. Juvé-Udina and published in various scientific papers in 2012, proposes a re-conceptualization that illustrates the articulation and structure of the ATIC terminology and ontologies. For practical purposes, the use of these structuring elements in healthcare information systems, for the representation of the nursing care process and outcomes, allows conceptual clustering  and ease sorting and location of elements and their relationships.

ATIC structuring elements exhibit different levels of abstraction and may be used in a matrix and include:

  • Dimensions
  • Categories
  • Components
  • Metaconcepts
Structuring element Main features ATIC label

Dimensions

Cluster at top level of abstraction.

Builds a domain (construct) comprising various related entities.

The assessment and the diagnostic axes share the same dimensions.

The intervention axis owns specific dimensions.

Being physical

Being conscious

Being autonomous

Intersections

Integrality

Family environment

Social environment

Natural environment

Categories

High level of abstraction cluster.

Set of abstract typologies of attributes, allowing categorization of basic concepts.

Each axis has its own categories.

Activity, rhythm, or reactivity disorganization

Disruptive discharge, expulsion, loss or exteriorization

Effort, interest or predisposition

Perceptual or interpretive distortion

Pressure, level or volume imbalance

(…)

Components

High-intermediate level of abstraction cluster.

Shared by the three main axes.

Includes entities (parts) of the different dimensions.

Cardiocirculatory

Digestive

Domestic

Emotional adaptive

Excretory homeostatic

Immunohematological

(…)

Metaconcepts

Intermediate abstraction clusters.

Used to typify conceptual or thematic fields.

Used as knowledge nodes and connection points among different nursing terminological systems or standardized languages.

Used as interdisciplinary knowledge nodes and link points with classifications or reference vocabularies from other disciplines .
